PS80 ATTENDANCE POLICY

School Year 2022-2023

Absences PictureAttendance is a required legal record of whether a student was in school or not. Attendance is a part of a child’s permeant record. Schools are required to track and record students’ attendance daily.

Attendance Facts:

  • If a child has 2 absences each month by the end of the school year that child would have missed an entire month of instructional time.
  • Children who miss 20 or more days of school a year are significantly less likely to graduate from high school.
  • Children with good attendance are more likely to do well in school, develop responsibility, self-discipline, and persistence.
  • Children with good attendance are more likely to perform well on tests.
  • A student who is late 10 minutes every day will miss 30 hours of instructional time for the school year.
  • Education is a priority!

What you can do:

  • Establish and stick to basic routines, (going to bed early, waking up on time, etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.
  • Speak to your child about going to school every day.
  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and work with the teacher, administrator or afterschool provider to get them excited about going to school.
  • Limit the amount of time that your child misses school due to medical appointments or illness. If possible, avoid scheduling doctor's appointments during the school day.
  • If your child is absent, work with the teacher to make sure she or he has an opportunity to learn and make up the academics missed.

Attendance pictureIf your child is absent a note explaining the absence is required on the day of return. All notes should contain the following information:

  1. Date that the note has been written.
  2. Exact date(s) of absence(s)
  3. Exact and specific reason for absences.
  4. Doctor’s note if required.
  5. Contact number and signature of parent or guardian.

We suggest that you make every effort to schedule family events with the school’s calendar in mind. If possible plan holiday or family trips during weekends or school vacations. In the case of family emergencies or unexpected trips, inform your child’s teacher as soon as possible. By making attendance a priority, you will be taking an important step in supporting your child’s academic success. Remember everyday counts!

Chronic Absence -15 days Red Light: Danger Zone! You student has missed an excessive amount of days of school.
Warning Signs -10 days Yellow Light: Be Careful! Be careful not to miss any more days of school!
Good Attendance -5 days Green Light: Great Job! Keep up the good work!

What You Can Do:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Make sure your child arrives to school daily and on time.
  • Contact the school when your child is absence or send a note with them when they return to school.
  • Have a back-up plan for getting your child to school if something comes up.

If you have any question concerning attendance, see Ms. Klink or Ms. Christie for more information.
